Rappler founder and chief executive officer Maria Ressa’s credibility as a fact checker crumbled into pieces after she claimed in an interview with ABC News Australia that ABS-CBN has 11 million employees.
Speaking on ABC News Australia’s “The World” Saturday (May 9), Ressa said: “This is a network that has 11 million employees while I was still handling the news group.”
Ressa used to head ABS-CBN’s Integrated News and Current Affairs division before founding Rappler.
Netizen MJ Quiambao-Reyes, who posted a clip of Ressa’s interview on Twitter, said the Rappler executive’s claim was laughable at best.
“PINOCCHIA-NG-INA! Yung 11K nga malaking kalokohan na, naging 11M pa. And she calls herself a journalist,” Quiambao-Reyes tweeted.
Rappler is one of the two Philippine media organizations designated by Facebook as fact checkers for content posted by other media entities.
Ressa’s blunder, however, shows Rappler is as capable of spreading fake news as other media groups it’s flagging for alleged erroneous or misleading content.
