‘Di nya pipirmahan agad! Duterte to review anti-terror bill with public interest in mind

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte will take into consideration the public interest in evaluating the provisions of the anti-terrorism bill, his spokesman said.

“The public interest on the bill will make the President review the provisions of the bill even more closer,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview over ANC’s “Headstart” Wednesday.

Once it reaches his desk, Roque said that Duterte still has to carefully study the proposed law.

“There has not been a budget bill signed into law without a specific veto coming from the President. As a matter of course, the President will not automatically sign a law, it is scrutinized,” the secretary explained.

“Although the difference is you can’t have a line-item veto in terms of normal legislation, whereas you can do it in a budget bill. But, that’s how the process works in Malacañang,” he also said.

In a letter to Congress on June 1, Duterte certified the passage of the Anti-Terrorism Act as urgent “to address the urgent need to strengthen the law on anti-terrorism in order to adequately and effectively contain the menace of terrorist acts for the preservation of national security and the promotion of general welfare.”

The Palace confirmed yesterday that it has received a copy of the enrolled anti-terror bill.
