Speaker Alan Cayetano has taken the cudgels for political “oligarchs” who some people believe President Rodrigo Duterte should also dismantle like he is doing to oligarchs in business.
“Dito sa Taguig, hindi ninais ng mga Cayetano na tatlo sa mataas na posisyon ay Cayetano,” said Cayetano in a press conference.
The Cayetanos are among the biggest political oligarchs in the country – Alan and his wife have seats in Congress; his brother, Lino, is mayor; and his sister, Pia, is a senator. The family owes its entry to politics to ABS-CBN Corp. which made their father, the late Senator Rene Cayetano, a popular personality.
After Duterte gloated about taking down oligarchs like the Lopezes and Ayalas, Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman challenged him to take on other oligarchies, specifically in the military, religion, and politics.
But Cayetano argued that his family’s political dynasty was a result of the term limits on politikos imposed under the Constitution.
“Sabi nila, ayaw na nila ng dynasty. Ang nag-create po ng dynasty is ‘yung term limits, ‘di ba? Marami sa mga very good governors, tumakbong mayor—marami sa mayors na ganyan. And then ‘yung bitter political rivalries,” Cayetano said.
“Sasabihin nila, ‘yung mga mayor natin panay pulitika. Eh three years ‘yung term eh. In the middle of the term ka mae-elect. Habang hindi natin ginagawa na katulad ng worldwide—mga four to five years ang term eh, para nakakapag-planning, nakakapag-trabaho. ‘Yun po kayang CEO sa mga kumpanya, sabihin natin sa kanila, ‘Three years lang ang term mo, at ‘yung una mong taon ay sa gitna ng fiscal year, and then sa last year mo nangangampanya ka’, tingin n’yo mapapatakbo nang maganda ‘yung mga kumpanya?” he added.
