Duterte warns of new Manila lockdown if COVID cases surge

By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte has warned of the possible reimposition of the strict lockdown if the easing of quarantine measures will lead to spikes in coronavirus cases.

“Kung maaari since there is already the opening, a gradual opening, titingnan natin kung puwede ba ‘to kasi kung babalik tayo sa dati, if the contamination will be as fast as before and it will continue to infect ‘yung nakalabas na, then we’ll have to just go back to the original program,” said Duterte in a televised public address late Tuesday night.

Last May 16, the President placed Metro Manila and other areas considered as high-risk under a modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) until May 31.

“Itong mga lugar na hindi pa binuksan, which are under the modified lockdown, ito yung nakita namin na talagang kailangan para hindi lalala ang sitwasyon,” according to him.

More establishments were allowed to reopen under this condition. Public transportation, however, remains prohibited in areas under MECQ.

As of May 19, the country has 12,942 cases of coronavirus, with 2,843 recoveries and 837 deaths.
