Epal na, nanadya pa! PH rep in Taiwan slams Roque over ‘part of China’ remark

The Philippines’ representative in Taiwan questioned Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque’s motive in saying the island-nation was part of China, saying there was no reaso for him to meddle in affairs of other countries.

Angelito Banayo, chairman and resident representative of the Manila Eonomic and Cultural Office (MECO) in Taipei, told ANC Friday (May 1) that Roque should be careful with his remarks since he’s speaking for President Rodrigo Duterte.

“It’s good that [he] has accepted the fact that deportation is the preorgative of the host country… but wha official purpose does it serve to needlessly remark that Taiwan is part of China and wading in internal affairs of two countries?” Banayo said.

Is the purpose to injure the sensitivity of a nation that treats almost 160,000 Filipino workers with fairness and equity? What then is the purpose of extending animosity with a political non-sequitur?” he added.

Roque earlier said the Philippines will leave Taiwan to decide if a Filipina worker working there should be deported over her Facebook posts critical of President Rodrigo Duterte.

“We leave that wholly to the decision of Taiwan and China. Taiwan is part of China,” Roque told ANC.

Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs protested his remark, saying Philippine officials should “stop misrepresenting Taiwan as a part of China.”

The island-nation has repeatedly insisted it is an independent country. However, the Philippines adheres to a “One China policy,” which considers Taiwan as part of China.
