No time to waste: Migz Zubiri eyes approval of ABS-CBN provisional franchise by end-May

The Senate could approve the provisional franchise for ABS-CBN before the end of May following its swift passage by the House of Representatives, Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri said Wednesday (May 13).

In a statement, Zubiri said he has transferred bills granting ABS-CBN a new franchise to the Senate Committee on Public Services chaired by Grace Poe so hearings can start next week.

Poe, however, has inhibited from the hearings and will let Senator Sherwin Gatchalian lead them.

“The hearing can be conducted any time next week and hopefully the committee report can be sponsored by Wednesday during session and 2nd reading could be done by the 25th of May. We will push for 3rd reading on June 1 and hopefully ratified by both houses before June 3,” Zubiri said.

June 3 is the last session day for both the Senate and House before Congress adjourns sine die on June 5.

House Bill 6732 filed by Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano and other House leaders grants ABS-CBN a provisional franchise valid until October 31, 2020. It was passed by the House on second reading on Wednesday.

The House is expected to approve the bill on final reading next week so it can be transmitted to the Senate.
