House Deputy Minority leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate is accusing Transportation Secretary Art Tugade of taking advantage of COVID-19.
Zarate said there was no reason for Tugade to prolong the suspension of the operation of public utility jeepneys and buses with the National Capital Region (NCR) under general community quarantine (GCQ) on Monday (June 1) except to phase out the jeepneys.
“It appears that the DOTr ( Department of Transportation) is using the CoVid pandemic to push through with its anti-people and anti-poor plan to get rid of jeepneys. With the shift to GCQ on Monday we can expect once again a manifestation of the grave mass transportation crisis because those going out to work would have only a very minimal means of transportation,” said
Zarate said Tugade had been cautioned against this devious scheme in the hearings of the House transportation committee.
“The DOTr at the minimum could have allowed 50% of jeepneys and buses with the proper compliance to health and other quarantine protocols to operate as the drivers, conductors, even small operators, have no more means of making ends meet,” said Zarate.
“Hindi katanggap-tanggap na samantalahin ng DoTr ang kasalukuyang krisis para i-phase out ang mga jeepneys at iratsada pa din ang so-called modernization na intinutulak ng malalaking negosyante ng sasakyan,” he added.
