By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte feels the country is not prepared to facilitate online learning.

In his prerecorded national address aired Friday, Duterte expressed doubts on our readiness to use blended and virtual learning as an alternative to a traditional classroom during the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) crisis.

The President lamented the lack of resources needed to successfully implement the platform for both teachers and students.

“(Education) Secretary (Leonor) Briones is insisting that there should be an alternative there and she has a very good program for that. Parang tele-conferencing,” according to him.

“The technology is good but I don’t know if we’re ready for that. Meaning to say, if we have enough of those na gamitin para sa whole of the Philippines. We’re talking of students, it’s million, meron ba siya? If she has, if we can afford we’ll buy it and she can proceed with her novel idea on how the children can continue with their education,” added Duterte.

The Department of Education earlier announced that classes will resume on August 24 utilizing blended forms of learning to ensure the safety of students amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
