By Prince Golez

President Rodrigo Duterte directed Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to form a team that would deal with the distribution of compensation to health workers to families of health workers who have died of or infected with the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

“I am asking Secretary Duque to form a new team that would focus on the immediate delivery of the assistance that should be given to those, yung namatay, tapos yung nagkasakit, and I expect it within 24 hours,” Duterte said in a nationally televised speech aired Friday.

“It may not really be from your office or from the department itself. You can get persons of known honesty diyan sa opisina mo even temporary just for a new designation just to take care of this funds which ought to be in hands of intended beneficiaries by this time,” he added.

The Chief Executive expressed his frustration over the 2-month delay in the distribution of financial assistance to coronavirus-stricken health workers, dismissing it as “totally unacceptable.”

Under the Bayanihan to Heal as One Act, public and private health workers who die while fighting the Covid-19 pandemic will receive P1 million each.

Those who contract severe infection while in the line of duty will be compensated with P100,000 each.
