Breaking away from the usual rallies, administration critics will stage a “mañanita” on Independence Day, June 12 to show their opposition to the anti-terrorism bill.
The group CONTEND will stage a mañanita at the University of the Philippines Diliman starting 10:30 a.m. Participants are asked to wear black and bring party accessories.
The online announcement for the event read: “Magdala ng ambag na pagkain at panawagan!”
The Movement Against Tyranny will also hold a “Grand Mañanita” starting 9 a.m. on June 12.
In an advisory sent to the media, Movement Against Tyranny Co-Convenor Sr. Mary John Mananzan, OSB, said the following activities will take place:
– From 9-11am – decentralized actions in schools, churches, freedom parks, etc. with strict observance of social distancing and protective health measures
– Whole day display of protest streamers in front of schools, churches, offices and buildings
– Whole day posting of messages, pictures and videos in social media using the hashtags #BawiinAngKalayaan and #JunkTerrorBill
Mananzan said the “Grand Mañanita” protest “is a good venue for ordinary people to show their opposition to the anti-terrorism bill and commitment to uphold our hard-won rights and freedoms.”
She said they are hoping President Rodrigo Duterte will not sign the anti-terrorism bill into law amid concerns it will be used to clamp down on administration critics.
The word “mañanita” became vogue since it was held for Metro Manila police chief Major General Debold Sinas on May 8.
“Mañanita” simply means serenading a birthday celebration at dawn. However, photos from the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Facebook page showed a party for Sinas’ birthday inside Camp Bagong Diwa.
The celebration took place while Metro Manila was under enhanced community quarantine and mass gatherings were banned.
