Napahamak sa kadaldalan! Janette Garin ain’t surprised by Leachon’s exit from COVID-19 task force

Former Health Secretary and now Iloilo Rep. Janette Garin isn’t surprised that health expert Tony Leachon was asked to resign as an adviser to the national task force in charge of the government’s COVID-19 response.

In a statement Friday (June 19), Garin said Leachon’s tendency to rant about the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) was his downfall.

“[I]tong si Dr. Leachon, ang tendency niya ay imbes na makipagdiskurso sa mga eksperto, ay ilalabas sa media ang mga opinyon niya. Real doctors and scientists do not do this. Unless, may pangarap na posisyon kaya nag-iingay. He seems to have the preponderance to always think how he can land on the headlines rather than focus on how to help,” the former Health Secretary said.

Garin slammed Leachon for going to the media to complain instead of bringing up his concerns to the IATF.

“He was in the best position to counter decisions, offer better solutions and ultimately effect change. Bakit hindi ginawa? Bakit sa media at sa social media pa rin naglalabas ng mga opinyon? All for show ba ito? To get followers and supporters? Kay Dr. Leachon, shut up na. Tumulong na lang,” she said.

Leachon said he was asked to resign from IATF for openly criticizing the government’s response to the COVID-19 crisis. Malacañang, meanwhile, said President Rodrigo Duterte was particularly displeased with Leachon’s tirades on social media.
