Wala pa ring plano kontra COVID-19! Health workers call for Duque’s resignation

A group of health workers called on Health Secretary Francisco Duque III to resign Saturday (June 27) due to his alleged lack of a concrete plan to address the COVID-19 crisis.

The Alliance of Health Workers (AHW) said Duque should be held accountable for the continued rise in the number of COVID-19 cases five months since the first patient was recorded in the country.

“We demand Secretary Duque’s resignation and hold him accountable for his neglect, incompetence, shortcomings and failure in dealing with (the) health crisis especially in COVID-19 response,” said AHW national president Robert Mendoza in a Facebook post.

Mendoza said Duque’s incompetence puts health workers at risk since they’re at the frontlines of fighting COVID-19.

“We have been fighting the COVID-19 pandemic for nearly 5 months now, but the DOH and Duterte administration still have no clear and comprehensive plans on how to combat the deadly virus and the health workers’ situation are getting worse,” he said.

As of June 22, there are already 3,122 health workers who contracted COVID-19. Thirty-three of them died.

Mendoza said he has written DOH to bring to its attention the problems faced by health workers, such as the lack of personal protective equipment and “heavy shifts” at hospitals. He, however, said AHW’s concerns have been ignored by the agency.
