Pinoys want Duterte to tackle COVID response, education, economy in 5th SONA: poll

By Prince Golez

Coronavirus (Covid-19) response, education, and economic recovery are the top issues Filipinos want to hear from President Rodrigo Duterte’s fifth State of the Nation Address (SONA) later this afternoon, according to a WR Numero survey.

The poll conducted between July 20 and 25 showed that the majority of the 10,170 respondents also wanted Duterte to discuss job opportunities, corruption, police and military abuse, and transportation/infrastructure on his address.

Least preferred topics, on one hand, included the issues surrounding the West Philippine Sea, terrorism, and illegal drugs.

Malacañang had said Duterte is expected to present the country’s recovery plan amid the coronavirus disease pandemic during his penultimate SONA.

“As far as the speech of the President is concerned, what will definitely be in the speech is a roadmap for recovery,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in a July 22 interview with The Source.

The public, Roque added, could expect Duterte to discuss “in much detail” his administration’s efforts to contain and mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

“I think you can imagine that the President will summarize the effects of the COVID pandemic, as well as the responses of government and the way forward (and) how the government will actually approach this problem,” according to him.
