Dizon: Coronavirus spike in Philippines ‘normal’

By Prince Golez

Testing czar Vince Dizon on Thursday dismissed the rising coronavirus (Covid-19) infections in the country as “normal, citing the government’s increased testing efforts.

Dizon was reacting to The Strait Times report that the Philippines is likely to become Southeast Asia’s Covid-19 hotspot due to the ongoing spike in confirmed cases.

“I think it’s very difficult to make speculative statements like that. I’d rather not comment on the speculations made by a newspaper in another country,” according to him.

“What the data shows us is that since we ramped up testing we have found more positive [cases], and our people have to understand that that is normal. Dati, nung wala tayong testing, hindi tayo nakakahanap ng masyadong maraming positibo,” he added.

Dizon also boasted that the Philippines has the highest test rates in Southeast Asia, with more than 30,000 tests per day.

As of Wednesday, the Department of Health reported the total number of Covid-19 cases at 115,980.
