Mag-fact check bago bumanat! Zubiri denies ‘showboating’ claims as Cayetano’s lackeys resort to insults

Senate Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri called on congressmen to get their facts right after allies of House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano accuse senators of “showboating” over the proposed Bayanihan to Recover as One bill.

In a statement Saturday (August 22), Zubiri said he was “appalled” at the statements of some congressmen that certain “high and mighty senators” felt like the Bayanihan 2 bill wasn’t up to their standards.

“The senators were just congratulating the bicam for a job well don and never did we ‘scoff at’ the ratified bill. Believe me when I say that if the measure was inadequate, we would never have approved it at the bicam level,” he said.

Without mentioning anyone, Zubiri added: “Please tell us Mr. Congressmen, in which statement did we say that the bill was never up to standards? Pls. give [or] show me the exact quote because after review of the video, there were no insinuations made. So get your facts straight before you make any accusations towards me and the institution.”

During the plenary session on August 20 to ratify the Bayanihan 2 bill, Zubiri and Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III lauded senators who were part of the bicameral conference committee on the measure for being “selfless” in pushing for their advocacies.

One of the contentious issues discussed during the meetings was about the P10-billion recovery fund for the tourism sector, which the House wanted to be spent on infrastructure projects. Critics said such a move would make the allocation a pork barrel fund.

Laguna Rep. Dan Fernandez, an ally of Cayetano, slammed senators for resorting to “showboating in aid of reelection.”

“It is clear as daylight that these pathetic senators have been seized by political schizophrenia in slyly positioning way ahead of the 2022 elections at the expense of the House of Representatives,” he said.

Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor, another ally of Cayetano, slammed some senators for thinking they are “somewhat superior” to their counterparts from the House.

“They haughtily see themselves on a pedestal, even if many of them or their peers have also served as House members before being elected to the Senate. No one is on a pedestal here. All of us were elected and are tasked to serve the people. Wag kayong magmagaling ,” Defensor said.
