Palace downplays spike in new coronavirus cases: ‘It’s not just happening in the Philippines’

By Prince Golez

Malacañang on Wednesday dismissed the recent coronavirus (Covid-19) infection spike by claiming that “it’s happening in 70 percent of the planet right now.”

On Tuesday, the Department of Health reported a record-high of 6,352 new cases, bringing the total to 112,593.

“It’s not just happening in the Philippines. Let’s not have this wrong view that only the Philippines is having this increase in cases,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with The Source.

Roque also said the new mutation of Covid-19, which makes the virus more infectious, may have caused the increase in the cases.

“Maybe it is because of the mutation of the virus also. But, I emphasized ‘maybe’ because the University of the Philippines Genome Center has not confirmed that this mutated virus has actually landed in our shores,” according to him.

The Palace official reiterated the rise in cases is “being experienced by an overwhelming majority of countries worldwide.”
