2021 Ford Territory vs Other Chinese Compact Crossovers

You asked and we obliged. After comparing the 2021 Ford Territory versus its Japanese and Korean rivals, we’ve decided to do a part two. This time, we’re pitting it against its rivals from a similar country of origin: China.

As always, you can go straight to the table below for a blow-by-blow spec comparison. But for those who’re pressed for time (or free data), here’s how Ford’s newest SUV stacks up against the Chery Tiggo 7, Geely Coolray, JAC S4, and MG ZS.

• Price-wise, the MG ZS stands as the most affordable—being the only one below the P 1-million price bracket. This is followed by an unlikely candidate, the JAC S4 then the Territory Trend, Tiggo 7, and Coolray Sport.
• In terms of dimensions, the Territory wins. It’s 75 mm longer than its nearest competitor, the Cherry Tiggo 7; with a wheelbase that’s stretched by 48 mm more too. That said, the additional size does reflect in the Territory’s weight. It’s the heaviest one in this group with the only non-turbo offering, the MG ZS being the lightest.
• With current tariffs with China favoring engines with a displacement of 1.5-liters, it’s no surprise that all of these cars have the same displacement—1.5-liters. However, most have opted to slot in a turbo to give it an additional kick save for the MG ZS. Most though end up with the same sort of power figures except for the Geely Coolray and its 177 horsepower, 255 Nm of torque outputs. Without a doubt, the Coolray is the hot hatch of the group.
• It’s amazing to see how each of these brands opted for different gearbox options with Ford and JAC going for a CVT; Chery and Geely a dual clutch; and MG, a conventional torque converter automatic. All of them have cruise control as standard, but only the Territory (in Titanium+ trim) has adaptive cruise control.
• 17 or 18-inch wheels are standard among these Chinese SUVs, but only the Ford, Chery, and Geely benefit from larger 18-inch wheels (the Territory has the thickest tires too). Narrowing it down further, only the Territory and the Tiggo 7 have rear independent suspension, while all the others have rear torsion beams.
• In terms of exterior trim, most have already have LEDs DRLs and headlights (except for the MG ZS), but only the Coolray gets LED front fog lights too. It seems the Chinese love their panoramic sunroofs because all of them have large panes of glass at the top.
• Inside, leather or leather-like seating (PVC) is standard, but only the Territory gets them with heating and cooling elements. Power seats seem to be an important feature to the Chinese as are automatic climate control and a touchscreen-based infotainment system.
• From a safety stand point, all have multiple airbags (at least 4), ABS with EBD, and stability control. Only the Territory and JAC S4 though gets pre-collision braking, blind spot indicators, and lane departure warning/assist. Meanwhile, the Coolray does get blind spot indicators as well. It’s not mentioned in the chart, but both the Territory and the Coolray offer automated parking systems along with their collision sensors and 360-degree cameras.
