A special investigation team (SIT) of the Department of Justice (DOJ) is set to meet this week with the family of slain National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant Randy Echanis.
“The AO 35 Secretariat is also set to meet with the Echanis family this week,” said DOJ Undersecretary Markk Perete said on Tuesday (Sept. 1).
Perete said the AO 35 Task Force which investigates extrajudicial killings has already formed SITs to investigate not only the killing of Echanis but also of Karapatan activist Zara Alvarez.
“We also encourage all parties, the colleagues of Alvarez included, to participate in this investigation,” said the undersecretary.
Echanis was killed in Quezon City last Aug. 10, while, Alvarez was gunned down in Bacolod City on Aug. 17.
“In our meeting with the SIT leaders two weeks ago, the Secretariat directed them to get in touch with all relevant persons,” said Perete.
“We will have a monitoring and coordination meeting sometime this month,” he added.
