After announcing that public commuters will have to deal with reduced social distancing, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has backtracked on the idea after President Rodrigo Duterte himself spoke against the idea.
It must be remembered that the DOTr, under the advice of The Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF-EID) wanted to reduce the physical distance between public transport users from the globally accepted 1-meter standard to 0.75 meters, before being reduced to 0.5 meters after two weeks, and 0.3 meters after another two weeks.
That plan though has now been scrapped after Malacañang ordered the DOTr to continue implementing the 1-meter social distancing rule. Public transportation users can expect to go back to the 1-meter social distancing rule starting today, September 19.
Aside from the 1-meter distance between commuters, the mandatory use of face shields and face masks will continue. The DOTr also recommends that commuters refrain from talking and eating in all forms of public transportation.
