Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra doesn’t guess the real motives behind President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision to give absolute pardon to United States Marine Joseph Scott Pemberton.
“I cannot speculate on the President’s motives,” said Guevarra.
The secretary pointed this out even after Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque believes that the President did it in order for the Philippines to secure from the US a vaccine against the COVID-19 virus.
“He (Duterte) has explained his reason for granting pardon to Mr. Pemberton. For me that’s the end of the story. Let’s move on,” Guevarra said.
Pemberton has been sentenced to imprisonment ranging from six to 10 years following his 2015 conviction for the 2014 killing of a transgender Jennifer Laude.
Laude’s family recently opposed the Olongapo City court’s order granting the motion of Pemberton for early release after crediting his good conduct time allowance (GCTA).
Duterte eventually granted Pemberton absolute pardon as the chief executive pointed out that it was not the fault of the American that no one recorded his GCTA while in detention.
