Malacañang said it understands Senator Leila de Lima’s opposition to the ongoing Manila Bay rehabilitation.
De Lima is currently in jail so she won’t be able to appreciate the government’s beautification of Manila Bay, according to Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque.
“Naiintindihan ko po kung hindi sang-ayon si Senator Leila de Lima dahil hindi naman po siya makikinabang dahil siya ay nakakulong, hindi niya makikita iyong ganda ng Manila Bay,” Roque said in a recent virtual presser.
In a dispatch sent from Camp Crame Wednesday, De Lima criticized the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for dumping crush dolomite on Manila Bay’s shore so it can look like the world-famous Boracay Island.
De Lima, who has been detained since 2017 on drug charges, also called the agency the “Department of Environmental Cosmetics.”
“For some idiotic inevitability, the DENR has caught the window-dressing bug of this administration and has now decided to become the Department of Environmental Cosmetics. Again, DENR’s mandate is rehabilitation, preservation, and protection of our environment. It is not a beach resort developer,” she added.
