House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano’s move to terminate deliberations on the proposed 2021 budget and session until November 16 is “not illegal,” according to Malacañang.
In an interview over CNN Philippines’ The Source Wednesday, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque described the early suspension of the session as a “very astute political move.”
The suspension of sessions, which prevented the turnover of the House Speakership from Cayetano to Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, was supposed to take place this October 14.
“It avoided intramurals that could have possibly happened on October 14,” said Roque.
“For what it’s worth, I think you need to have the experience of Speaker Alan Cayetano because he has dealt with the same rules, not only for three terms as Congressman, but also as a two-termer Senator.
“There was a plenary vote that they will go on break already. That means no one can question already the speakership in October. The earliest that they can do that is November [16],” he added.
