House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano is slowly losing support among lawmakers following the removal of 1-PACMAN party-list Rep. Mikee Romero as Deputy Speaker due to his alliance with Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco, a veteran congressman said Sunday (October 4).
Buhay party-list Rep. Lito Atienza said Cayetano has found himself “in a difficult situation” after removing Romero, the president of the 54-member party-list coalition.
Romero was replaced Friday (October 2) as Deputy Speaker by Capiz Rep. Fredenil Castro, a key ally of Cayetano.
Atienza said Velasco is also assured of support by the Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC) and his own party, PDP-Laban.
“I am sure hindi hihiwalay ang mga political chieftains kay Presidente,” Atienza said. “All he (Velasco) has to do is call the smaller groups.”
Atienza claimed that majority of the pro-administration lawmakers were dismayed by Cayetano’s continued refusal to honor the term-sharing agreement for the speakership, which they allegedly view as an “open defiance” of the President’s will.
He reminded the Speaker to honor the agreement and step down on October 14, the last session day of Congress before it goes on a month-long break.
