Palace assures payment of PRC debt by next week

By Prince Golez

The government will settle at least 50 percent of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation’s (PhilHealth) debt to the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) this or next week, Malacañang said Wednesday.

The PhilHealth owes the PRC P930 million for its coronavirus testing service. The non-profit organization has ceased conducting swab tests after the government failed to pay its debt.

“The President has already committed to PhilHealth that it will be paid and so I think it will be paid if not this week then next week at the latest,” Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source.

“I understand that the Red Cross cannot continue functioning unless it also has its cash requirements. That’s why we give utmost priority to settle at least 50 percent because it’s to the interest of the Red Cross and the country that we continue our PCR testing since the Red Cross is responsible for 25 percent of all our testing,” added Roque.

Last Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte assured the PRC that the government will settle the accumulated debt over unpaid fees for Covid-19 tests.

“Do not worry. We will pay. It will take time but we will pay. We’ll look for the money. Hindi naman marami but ang priorities natin dito is really medical at treatment, medical attention… Mabayaran ito in a short while. Do not worry,” Duterte said in a televised address.
