Pope to resume remote general audiences over virus rises

Pope Francis will again stop his weekly general audiences with the public because of an increase in novel coronavirus cases, and instead resume a remote, live-streamed version, the Vatican said Thursday.

The pope went back to having in-person general audiences at the beginning of September after a six-month hiatus, following a sharp drop in the number of fresh daily cases in Italy due to a severe spring lockdown.

But infections have risen again in recent weeks, hitting almost 25,000 reported cases in a 24 hour period.

The Wednesday audiences will be broadcast from Apostolic Library “in order to avoid any possible future risk to the health of the participants”, the Vatican said.

The decision also came after a person tested positive for Covid-19 following the audience last week, it said.
