Those doubting the safety of the Geely Coolray can put all those doubts to rest. The Chinese carmaker’s compact crossover just scored an impressive 5-star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
The model tested is actually the Malaysian version of the Coolray—the Proton X50. Despite the nameplate change though, it’s pretty much the same car.
Assembled in Malaysia for the Malaysian and Thailand market, the X50 (aka Coolray) scored 84.26 out of a possible 100 earning it a 5-star safety rating. It scored 43.64 out of 50 in Adult Occupancy Protection. Testers noted that while side impact scored good, it only provided marginal protection to the driver’s chest and adequate protection to the front passenger’s chest during a frontal impact. It also noted some risk to the driver’s lower legs. It scored 21.17 percent out of 25 in Child Occupant Protection, and 19.44 out of 25 in Safety Assist Technology hampered by the lack of a Seatbelt Minder for the rear seats.
For the Malaysian market, the X50 is fitted with 4 airbags, stability control, and advanced driver aids such as autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. In the Philippines, the Coolray is fitted with 6 airbags, stability control, and blindspot monitoring.
