Professional road testers and seasoned automotive journalists from The Sunday Times—the most widely circulated and prestigious newspaper in the UK—have named the all-new Bentley Flying Spur as the Luxury Car of the Year in the publication’s 2020 Motor Awards.
The Sunday Times’ experts gathered vehicles that went on sale in the UK between June 1, 2019 and May 31, 2020, then shortlisted these into 14 categories, including those for sports cars, SUVs, electric cars and even one for British-built models. There were also two awards which were decided by readers, two voted by motoring celebrity and Sunday Times columnist Jeremy Clarkson, and another two which were dedicated to tech innovation and a personality.
The publication noted there was “no shortage of vehicles to consider,” adding that the results prove the unrelenting development in the auto industry as manufacturers produce vehicles of “many different flavors to suit every type of driver.” Citing that four of the 2020 Motor Awards winners are plug-in models, including one of the two Car of the Year awardees, Sunday Times said it is clear automakers also continue to innovate.
In the 2020 Motor Awards Luxury Car of the Year category, the Bentley Flying Spur bested five other models, three of which were SUVs, one a coupe, and the last a limited-run sports car. Sunday Times said the Bentley Flying Spur “represents the very best of hand-built luxury, with stunning attention to detail and exceptional craftsmanship.”
“Yet it’s also stunningly quick and wonderful to drive, so while the back seats are a wonderful place to spend time in, when Jeeves gets tired you’re more than happy to take over behind the wheel,” the publication said in its announcement.
The Bentley Flying Spur is the ultimate luxury Grand Touring sedan as it blends performance and limousine-levels of comfort. Powering the car is an enhanced version of Bentley’s 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged W12, which is mated to an advanced dual-clutch, eight-speed transmission. This new engine allows the car to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds and to a top speed of nearly 350 km/h.
Matching this capability are phenomenal handling and ride qualities, thanks to the Bentley Flying Spur’s electronic all-wheel steering that is combined with an active all-wheel drive system and the Bentley Dynamic Ride—the world’s first 48-volt electric anti-roll system.
The cabin design of the Bentley Flying Spur, defined by a new wing-themed fascia connecting the front and rear spaces, incorporates sustainable and natural materials while embracing a host of new technologies. Chief among these is the unique Bentley Rotating Display on the dashboard. This HD instrument panel rotates to offer a 12.3-inch digital touchscreen, analog dials, or a digital-detox wood veneer finish.
Another tech feature is a detachable touchscreen remote control—the centerpiece in the rear seat—that operates all the convenience functions, including the blinds, climate control and seat massage settings, as well as the multi-configuration mood lighting system.
Enhancing the cabin appointments is an extensive list of single and dual veneer wood options. Both the front and rear seats are wrapped with fluted leather featuring available diamond quilting. The door panel inserts are adorned with three-dimensional diamond quilted leather, too.
