Toyota's Global Sales and Production Up Year-on-Year in September

Even in the face of the COVID-19 crisis which broke out early this year, Toyota has just posted promising numbers showing positive global sales and production numbers—the first time it has happened in nine months. Recovery in global sales exceeded the carmaker’s own expectations although numbers are still down 16.4 percent.

Results in September were driven primarily by sales in the U.S. and China, as global sales were up 1.9 percent. Meanwhile, in terms of production it’s up 12 percent year-on-year thanks to the strong performance of Japan and China.

In Asia, excluding Japan, Toyota sales, including Lexus are up year-on-year. However, due to the effects of COVID-19, sales in Indonesia and Philippines remain down 52.7 and 20.8 percent respectively. In the Philippines, Toyota Motor Philippines sold a total of 10,657 units.

The situation is the same with regards to year-to-date sales (January to September 2020). Indonesian sales are down 46.4 percent and the Philippines is down 44.6 percent. Toyota Motor Philippines has so far sold 63,182 units.

In terms of production volume though, numbers are on the upswing at Toyota Motor Philippines’s Sta. Rosa, Laguna plant. However, it’s still 18.3 percent down year-on-year with a total of 4,424 Innova and Vios units produced. So far, 21,663 units have been produced year-to-date—that’s down 45.8 percent from the same period in 2019.
