‘Trabaho lang tayo:’ Paolo Duterte welcomes appointment as new House Accounts chair

Presidential son and Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte has welcomed his appointment as the new chair of the Committee on Accounts in the House of Representatives.

Duterte, who resigned as Deputy Speaker last Monday, was elected on Tuesday evening as head of the committee that handles the internal expenses including salaries, allowances and other benefits of members of the Lower House—including its standing committees and its personnel.

The presidential son’s appointment came only hours after Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Jay Velasco finally took over as Speaker of the august chamber, following the ouster of Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano from the House leadership.

Duterte replaced Cavite 8th district Rep. Abraham ‘Bambol’ Tolentino who previously held the said position since July 2019.

“Trabaho lang tayo,” said Duterte in a statement sent to Politiko.

“Whatever happens, my focus is will be to the people and our nation. Focus ko ay laging nasa mamamayan at bansa,” President Rodrigo Duterte’s eldest kin added.

The younger Duterte maintained his neutrality over the leadership scuffle between Velasco and Cayetano which was concluded on Tuesday, after supporters of the Marinduque solon took over the control of the plenary inside the Batasang Pambansa Complex and ratified the proceedings held in Celebrity Sports Plaza on Monday that elected the former as the 27th Speaker of the Lower House.

Cayetano tendered his irrevocable resignation minutes later via Facebook live after the House plenary solidified his ouster and ratified the election of Velasco. (CMC)
