Dapat mas mababa sa Red Cross! Velasco backs cap for COVID-19 swab test

House Speaker Lord Allan Jay Velasco has thrown his support behind President Rodrigo Duterte’s order to impose a price ceiling on RT-PCR tests for COVID-19.

In a statement Saturday (November 7), Velasco said the price cap for RT-PCR tests should preferably be “lower than what the Red Cross is charging.”

The Philippine National Red Cross is reportedly charging P3,500 for RT-PCR tests, while private hospitals charge as high as P12,500 for a single RT-PCR test.

“We really need to set a price that is affordable by most people, especially the poor, to encourage them to subject themselves to screening, whether they have symptoms or are asymptomatic,” Velasco said.

Duterte has tasked the Department of Health and the Department of Trade and Industry to set the price cap, which will be known next week.

Velasco said ramping up testing for COVID-19 will put the country in a better position to defeat COVID-19.

“More people having themselves tested will mean that the national government and local government units will be able to identify the infected faster, and isolate and treat them promptly,” he said.
