The barangay captain of a Camarines Sur village who swore Vice President Leni Robredo into office in 2016 got the surprise of his life on Friday (November 6) when she visited his community.
In a Facebook post, Robredo said she visited Rolando Coner at Punta Tarawal to check on his and the residents’ condition after the onslaught of Typhoon Rolly.
The Vice President said Coner was surprised by her visit because it was unexpected.
“He is that man in green, all covered in mud, because he was cleaning the muck out of the barangay hall brought about by the floods. He was apologetic as he did not know we were coming,” she said.
Robredo said residents of Punta Tarawal felt safer during the typhoon because of the sea wall built in their community, which could only be reached by boat.
“They proudly showed me the school our Angat Buhay partner, AGGAPP Foundation, built in 2017. Despite the ferocity of Rolly, the building was unscathed. They said that had they known it would be that sturdy, they would not have evacuated to the mainland anymore,” she said.
The Vice President said the evacuation center where the residents took shelter was damaged during the typhoon.
Robredo took her oath as Vice President separately from President Rodrigo Duterte in June 2016. Her staff said the setup was preferred by the Chief Executive.
