Many lawmakers are in favor of a proposal to create a Department of Disaster Resilience, according to Malacañang.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque made this assertion on Tuesday in response to the concerns raised by some senators that creating a Department of Disaster Resilience will just be another financial burden for the government.
“Hindi naman po bago yang proposal to create this department dahil 17th Congress po I had one version of the bill. So, ibig sabihin talagang maraming mambabatas ang nag-a-agree na kinakailangan po yang departamentong yan,” Roque said during his virtual presser.
“Kung hindi ako nagkakamali this was also identified as an administration bill ng ating Presidente Duterte,” he added.
But, the Palace official said legislation is initiated in Congress, which comprises two chambers: the Senate and House of Representatives.
“Pero gayunpaman, legislation is the area of the Senate and the House. We welcome any and all discussion dahil in the end, sila ang magsasabatas ng panukalang batas na yan,” he said.
President Rodrigo Duterte has repeatedly called on Congress for the creation of a new department that will solely focus on efforts to mitigate the impacts of natural hazards and climate change.
