Sinas’ appointment ‘no bearing’ on mañanita charges: Palace

By Prince Golez

Malacañang said the appointment of Major General Debold Sinas as the next chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) won’t affect the administrative and criminal charges filed against him for hosting a mañanita in May, a traditional dawn serenade, that allegedly violated lockdown protocols.

In his virtual presser Tuesday, Roque clarified the criminal charges against Sinas are still pending before the Taguig Prosecutor’s Office.

“Yung importanteng kaso talaga diyan eh yung kasong kriminal. Yan po ay nakabinbin pa rin sa tanggapan ng City Prosecutor ng Taguig, at dahil dito, ibig sabihin nito, wala pa pong kasong kriminal si Chief Sinas,” the secretary explained.

“Pagdating sa administrative, yan naman po ay nandiyan pa rin. Hindi naman po yan nadi-dismiss. But, the appointment of course will have no bearing on the decision of the Taguig Prosecutors’ Office,” he added.

On Monday, Roque said that President Rodrigo Duterte need not justify his decision in appointing Sinas as the new PNP chief since it is his prerogative.

Duterte, he added, took into consideration the track record of the former Metro Manila police head, particularly his contribution to the government’s war on drugs.
