Angara’s Christmas wish: Vaccines for all; end of pandemic

With recent breakthroughs in vaccine development, Senator Sonny Angara is hoping the coronavirus pandemic will end soon.

The pandemic has so far claimed many lives, weakened economies, and disrupted the way people have lived in recent months.

With Christmas a few weeks away, Angara posted a message of hope on Facebook, saying he wishes vaccine access for all as well as the end to the devastating global health emergency.

“Our Christmas wish: a vaccine for Filipinos and for this pandemic to end,” the senator said.

“As we wait for these vaccines, we should remain vigilant, through social distancing and safety protocols. #AlagangAngara,” he said.

Angara, a coronavirus survivor, also shared an update on the three candidate vaccines developed by Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca to fight the coronavirus disease on his Facebook page.

Of the three vaccines, Pfizer has the highest efficacy rate while AstraZeneca is considered the cheapest drug to prevent COVID-19.

The vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTEch has shown 95 percent efficacy based on clinical trials. The vaccine costs $39 or P1,900. Production can reach up to 1.3 billion by the end of 2021.

Moderna’s vaccine is 94 percent effective and may cost $50 to $70 or around P2,400 to P3,400. Around 1 billion doses can be produced next year.

Clinical trials showed the vaccine made by AstraZeneca-Oxford is 70 percent effective. It costs $6 to $8 or P300 to P400. Up to 3 billion doses can be manufactured by the end of 2021.
