Senator Grace Poe has a safe and loving home after getting adopted by movie star parents when she was young.
The senator recently remembered the long and tedious journey for her adoptive parents the late actor Fernando Poe Jr. and actress Susan Roces. She said her parents went through hurdles just to call her their own.
Poe was abandoned in a Catholic church in Iloilo City when she was a baby and was later adopted by FPJ and wife Susan. In 2015, she faced questions about her nationality before the Commission on Election since she was a foundling A Supreme Court later ruled she is a naturally born Filipino, allowing her to join the presidential race in 2010.
“Each time I speak about adoption, I am reminded of the hurdles my parents had to go through in order to legally call me their own,” Poe said in an Instagram post.
Poe walked down memory lane as she pushed for the passage of bill allowing easier adoption for abandoned children.
Senate Bill No. 1070 or the Domestic Administrative Adoption bill seeks to eliminate the judicial phase of the adoption process that usually takes one to three years. The long and costly process has discouraged potential parents from pursuing adoption, the senator said.
“We pushed for the Administrative Adoption Act in order to make process easier for more families,” she said.
“With this bill it is my hope that more Filipinos will be able to adopt children; because every child deserves a good home, a family, and a future,” she said.
From 2009 to 2020, around 7,890 abandoned or neglected children have been declared legally available for adoption. The Department of Social Welfare and Development data showed 4,943 children are still waiting for a permanent home.
