Guinea pig PSG! Lorenzana: China’s COVID-19 vaccine not given to Duterte, but all close-in security injected

President Rodrigo Duterte has not been vaccinated with the COVID-19 vaccine from China’s state-owned pharmaceutical company, Sinopharm, but all members of the Presidential Security Group (PSG) have been injected, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said.

In a message to reporters Monday (December 28), Lorenzana said PSG Chief Col. Jesus Durante III told him that Duterte has not been inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccine from Sinopharm.

Lorenzana, however, said “the whole PSG” haad been vaccinated “several weeks ago.”

“Other soldiers have not been vaccinated,” he added.

Lorenzana said he’s unaware of who gave the order for PSG personnel to be vaccinated.

The Defense chief stressed he also has not received the vaccine from Sinopharm.

Durante has defended the vaccination of Duterte’s close-in security with the China-made vaccine, saying the country is in “a state of war” against COVID-19 and it was necessary to protect the President.

“PSG is the primary unit of the [Armed Forces of the Philippines] that is mandated to protect the nation’s highest leader. With the current pandemic, PSG needs to ensure that they are not themselves threat to the President’s health and safety,” Durante said in a statement.

It was Duterte who revealed that some soldiers already received the COVID-19 vaccine from Sinopharm even if the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet authorized any vaccine for use in the country.

Pressed for details on Duterte’s pronouncement, the AFP said it was PSG personnel who received the vaccine.
