The government’s Zero Hunger Task Force conducted a series of consultations with stakeholders in public and private sectors on the National Food Policy (NFP) which is designed to address the problem of poverty and hunger.
The Task Force was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 101 which was signed by President Rodrigo Duterte in January 2020.
“We conducted a five-part consultation series involving various agencies and private groups and asked for inputs, comments and suggestions on the government’s National Food Policy which was launched last October 16,” Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, Task Force Zero Hunger chairman, said.
The Kasapatan at Ugnayan ng Mamamayan sa Akmang Pagkain At Nutrisyon (KUMAIN) consultation series is divided into five segments, which were all attended by development partners and international organizations including the World Bank, Japan International Cooperation Agency, World Food Programme, Food and Agriculture Organization, United Nations Children’s Fund, World Health Organization, and the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines.
Representatives from the academe, non-governmental organizations, civil society organizations, religious organizations and local government units also participated.
According to Nograles, the core aims of the initiative were to objectively address hunger and poverty, improve nutrition among Filipino families, ensure food security, and establish a sustainable system of local agriculture.
“We conducted the KUMAIN consultations thoroughly with as many partners as possible because we wanted a comprehensive and doable set of solutions. We also wanted all stakeholders to actively participate in enforcing the NFP based on their own inputs,” he said.
Citing the government’s twin goals of eliminating hunger and poverty, the secretary also emphasized that they expected “a solid collaboration between the public and private sectors in implementing all their plans of action.”
