Cavite rejects Sangley airport proposal from China-backed consortium, intends to rebid project

A proposal to develop the Sangley Point International Airport by a China-backed consortium has been junked over alleged “deficiencies” in the required documents submitted to the local government of Cavite.

Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla announced on Facebook on Wednesday his decision endorsing the recommendation of a special committee on the non-approval of the airport project proposal.

“Due to the various deficiencies of the submission of requirements to conclude the Joint Venture Agreement for the Sangley Point International Airport, the Cavite Provincial Government Special Selection Committee has recommended the non-approval of the redevelopment of the former airbase as presented by the applying parties,” he said.

“The recommendation was accepted and approved by my office dated January 26, 2021,” he said.

A consortium of Lucio Tan’s MacroAsia Corp. (MAC) and China Communications Construction Co. Ltd. (CCCC) earlier got the award for airport development and submitted required documents for the project. The group however reportedly was unable to completely comply with Cavite’s conditions.

Remulla is hopeful that a “qualified partner” will rebid for the airport development project in Cavite.

“While it does cancel the negotiations, the Project will restart and hopefully have a successful negotiation with any qualified partner by October 2021,” he said.

“I still believe that a new international airport is important for the country in the long run and it must be stressed that cancellation is not in prejudice of anyone applying again,” he said.
