Desperado na, bitter pa: Cayetano ‘spreading fakes news’ to stay relevant, says Atienza

Deputy Speaker Lito Atienza slammed ousted House Speaker and current Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano for allegedly for making unsubstantiated claims against the present House leadership in relation to the recent corruption allegations hurled at some congressmen.

Atienza, representative of Buhay Party-list, made the remarks in reference to Cayetano’s accusation that the Velasco Speakership has blocked the supposed plan by the former’s allies—Anakalusugan Party-list Rep. Michael Defensor and Bulacan Rep. Jose Antonio Sy-Alvarado, to investigate corruption allegations against some House members.

Atienza stressed Cayetano is “trying so hard to stay relevant even to the point of spreading fake news.”

“That’s fake news… nakikita kung gaano talaga sya kadesperado,” Atienza added.

Prior to the congressional break last December, the House plenary voted to replace Defensor and Sy-Alvarado as chairmen of the Committees on Public Accounts and on Good Government and Public Accountability, respectively.

Atienza stressed Cayetano’s claim runs counter to the statement made by Defensor last month when he criticized PACC chief Greco Belgica for announcing that less than a dozen congressmen were included in the PACC’s list of government officials allegedly involved in corruption within Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

Last month, Defensor challenged Belgica to file cases against lawmakers being linked to corrupt activities in DPWH projects if he has evidence or might as well just shut up.

Based on his previous statement, it would appear that Defensor was also hesitant to investigate his colleagues as any investigation by the House would be self-serving, Atienza said.

At the same time, Atienza said the public should not take Cayetano’s statements seriously against the present House leadership.

“Cayetano has an ax to grind against Speaker Velasco. You cannot expect him to say something good about the current House leadership,” he stressed.

The former Manila mayor advised Cayetano and his allies to stop their nonsense tirades against Velasco, saying “it won’t make them look good at all.”

“Cayetano and his minions should stop sourgraping and move on from the speakership row. Bagong taon na, tigilan na ang pagiging bitter,” said Atienza. (CMC)
