Palace Spokesman Harry Roque said he is willing to act as a mediator between Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and University of the Philippines (UP) president Danilo Concepcion to discuss the 1989 agreement that bars security forces from conducting operations in UP campuses.
The Department of National Defense earlier terminated its agreement with UP that prevents police and military from entering the campus grounds without prior notice, citing claims that the state university has become a hotbed of communist recruitment.
“I’m asking the DND Secretary and the president of UP to sit down and I’ve offered my good office to facilitate this meeting,” Roque said in an interview with the CNN Philippines’ The Source Wednesday.
“All I’m saying is let’s talk about this, I support the steps of the UP president, and let’s see why a 30-year old accord should not be continued when it has worked apparently well for the past 30 years,” he added.
Concepcion earlier asked Lorenzana to rethink his decision to terminate the DND-UP pact, also inviting the secretary for a meeting to address their concerns.
