The country’s COVID-battered economy worries President Rodrigo Duterte, his spokesman said.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque said Duterte stressed the need for the economy to rebound as soon as possible.
“Talagang nababahala na rin po ang ating Presidente na kinakailangang makabangon na tayo sa lalong mabilis na panahon dahil malinaw naman po na baka mas maraming nagugutom na ngayon at mamamatay sa gutom kaysa sa COVID,” Roque said during his televised briefing Tuesday.
“Kaya nga po ang panawagan mismo ni Presidente, ang Presidente na po iyan, siya na po ang mismong nagsabi: Mask, Hugas, Iwas; ingat-buhay para sa kabuhayan dahil talagang importante po na masagip na natin ang mas maraming numero ng ating kababayan sa pagkagutom na nagiging epekto ng matagal na lockdown,” he added.
For the whole of 2020, the Philippine economy contracted 9.5 percent, the worst year since World War II, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority.
