On Ash Wednesday, gov’t advises against marking foreheads with ashes: I-sprinkle na lang

By Prince Golez

To minimize any potential spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), the government still advises Catholic priests to sprinkle ashes on the heads of the faithful on Ash Wednesday.

This year, Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, will be on February 17.

Traditionally, priests apply the ashes to a worshipper’s forehead to signify repentance from sin.

“Sa Ash Wednesday, kung ano yung ginagawa natin noon, hopefully, tingin ko yun pa rin yung maging protocols ngayon sa pagpapahid, parang sprinkling na lang of the ash ang ginagawa,” Cabinet Secretary Karlo Norgales said in an interview over PTV-4 Wednesday.

On calls to increase the allowed capacity for religious events, Nograles said: “Wala pa akong natatanggap na request mula sa religious sector.”

At present, religious gatherings are up to 50 percent of the seating or venue capacity in areas under modified general community quarantine (MGCQ) and 30 percent in GCQ areas.
