Papaturok ka ba? Philippines begins China’s Sinovac vaccine rollout

By Prince Golez

The government has begun rolling out its Covid-19 Vaccination Program with yesterday’s arrival of vaccines from China’s Sinovac.

A symbolic vaccination took place simultaneously in various hospitals in Metro Manila on Monday.

Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, the director of the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), was the first to receive the first dose of Sinovac Biotech’s CoronaVac during a ceremonial vaccination at PGH.

Food and Drug Administration Director General Eric Domingo, infectious disease expert Dr. Edsel Salvana, and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Benhur Abalos also got inoculated.

Meanwhile, Testing czar Vince Dizon and Dr. Jose N. Rodriguez Memorial Hospital medical chief Dr. Fritz Famaran received the Sinovac vaccine at Tala Hospital, Caloocan City.

PNP General Hospital acting chief Lt .Col. Cleto Manongas and PNP Health Service director Luisito Magnaye, on one hand, led the vaccination rollout at Camp Crame in Quezon City.

The first 600,000 doses of the donated Chinese vaccine CoronaVac arrived at the Villamor Airbase in Pasay City Sunday afternoon.

The Food and Drug Administration earlier granted emergency use authorization to Sinovac but did not recommend the vaccine to health workers and senior citizens due to low efficacy rate.
