Villanueva to DOLE: ‘We don’t swap people for products’

Senator Joel Villanueva on Wednesday reminded the Department of Labor and Employment that nurses and health care workers were not products to be bartered off.

“I have no quarrel with the personalities, but I disagree with the proposal. OFW deployment is not a barter trade. We simply do not swap people for products,” the chair of the Senate committee on labor said..

He issued the statement after the DOLE offered the deployment of more Filipino nurses to the United Kingdom and Germany in exchange for Covid-19 vaccines.

An official of the labor department, Alice Visperas, revealed that Secretary Silvestre Bello III has asked the UK and Germany to provide the Philippines with at least 600,000 vaccines in exchange for the deployment of more Filipino nurses and other health care workers.

“Pero ang malaking katanungan po ay paano tayo humantong sa ganitong sitwasyon? Clearly, it is out of desperation that forced otherwise good people to be more creative in finding vaccines for their country. Theirs is a ‘kapit sa patalim’ move,” Villanueva said.

“Kung ginawa lang po sana ng IATF ang kanilang tungkulin, hindi sana mapipilitan ang DOLE na dumiskarte. So again, I do not question their motives but their means. They were thrown in that situation because some people dropped the ball,” he said.

“I have very high respect for Sec Bello. He’s been very helpful not only to our committee hearings, but his record shows how he walked the extra mile during this pandemic,” Villanueva said.
