Don’t make things complicated: House OKs bill on translating disaster-related info to local languages

By Billy Begas

The House of Representatives has approved a measure requiring government agencies and local government units to convert in an easily understandable language or dialect all announcements relevant to local or national disaster or emergency.

With 194 affirmative, no negative and abstention, the proposed Language Accessibility of Public Information on Disasters Act (House Bill 8943) was approved on third and final reading.

The translation shall be in Filipino and other regional language/s or dialect/s as deemed necessary by the government agency and local government unit concerned considering the geographical location of the affected communities and the intended recipients of the information.

“The translated information shall be disseminated as widely as possible through all available media and communication channels,” the measure read.

The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino was tasked to render the necessary technical assistance and expertise to the government agencies and LGUs including the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and monitor their compliance.
