Nissan PH Is Launching The LEAF On May 9. But There's One Big Problem

After a protracted delay, and tons of now forgotten teasers, Nissan is finally launching the all-electric Leaf on May 9, 2021.

The Leaf’s arrival, was originally confirmed by Nissan Philippines way back in 2019 for 2020. At the time, it was in pole position to become the country’s first-ever EV, only to be beaten by several other carmakers such as Hyundai, Jaguar, and even some Chinese brands like Chery and Changan thanks to its very early tease.

Curiously, and perhaps as an indication of the state of EVs here in the country, none of those launched are readily available at showrooms. They’ve been relegated on a by-order basis only.

As both the calendar year and fiscal year (FY2020-2021) ended, some thought that the Leaf would end up as a very expensive PR stunt, despite assurances that it will still arrive. Well, for those who wish to get their hands on Nissan’s iconic all-electric hatchback, there’s good news: it’s finally coming; for sure this time, on May 9.

There’s just one catch. Less than a month before the Philippine launch, Nissan has opted to facelift the Leaf globally.

The changes though are fairly minor—it dons a brand-new grille adorned with the updated Nissan logo. Inside, the climate control system is now fitted with Plasmacluster technology. Together with its high-performance air filter, it can block pollen, odor, and even kill bacteria—perfect for the COVID-19 times.

The updated Leaf retains its mechanicals, including its battery size—either 40 kWh or 62 kWh.

For now, Nissan Philippines hasn’t said which Leaf will eventually end up in their showrooms (facelifted or pre-facelift, bigger or smaller battery). But one thing’s for sure, everyone, especially the handful of dealers who signed up to carry the Leaf sure hopes it’s the new one. Rumored prices are all over the place—ranging from P 2 million to as high as P 3.290 million (check out if it makes economic sense for you).

Are you excited for the Nissan Leaf, or has your curiosity waned over the long wait?
