No more ECQ ‘ayuda’ despite 1-week lockdown extension, says Palace

By Prince Golez

No additional aid will be available to low-income households despite the extension of the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) status in the National Capital Region and other nearby provinces until April 11, Malacañang said Monday.

“The government, when it was decided to distribute P4,000 per family, considered already that the ECQ would be for two weeks. The reason is, of course, during Holy Week, they only lost 2 days of working days effectively,” Spokesman Harry Roque said in an interview with CNN Philippines’ The Source.

According to Roque, Budget Secretary Wendel Avisado said the government no longer has sources of financing available to provide assistance under the existing budget.

If there’s a need for further aid, Congress would have to be called into a special session to pass a supplemental budget so ECQ-affected individuals can receive another amelioration assistance, the Palace official said.

“For the time being…. the P23 billion released already will be the totality of ayuda that people will get,” he added.

On Saturday, Roque announced that President Rodrigo Duterte approved the recommendation of the government’s Covid-19 task force to extend the ECQ for a minimum of one week in Metro Manila and the adjacent provinces of Bulacan, Cavite, Rizal and Laguna.

As of April 4, the Philippines has 135,526 active cases of Covid-19.
