Task Force OKs use of automatic contact tracing via Smart Messaging System

By Prince Golez

The government’s coronavirus (Covid-19) task force has approved the recommendation of the National Economic and Development Authority to use automatic contact tracing through Smart Messaging System to improve the StaySafe digital application, according to Malacañang.

StaySafe.PH is the country’s official health condition reporting, contact tracing and social distancing system.

To ensure interoperability and integration of all contact tracing applications integration in the StaySafe.PH system, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said there will be an initial beta-testing of the Smart Messaging System in Pasig City on May 1, and beta-testing in the consortium of Antipolo and cities of Pasig, Mandaluyong and Valenzuela on the same day, with access to Covid-19 Document Repository System (CDRS).

Roque said the Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Diseases also approved the immediate completion of the transfer of ownership to the Department of Health (DOH) of the CDRS and the immediate integration of the CDRS with the StaySafe.PH System and other local contact tracing systems and applications.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) will head the over-all implementation of the national contact tracing app while the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will lead the national interoperability. The DOH, on one hand, is directed to ensure integration of the StaySafe.PH System with the CDRS.

The task force likewise directed the DILG to immediately coordinate and convene with DICT and DOH to formulate the necessary action plan with specific timelines and targets.
