To serve until 2026: Duterte picks Gesmundo as Chief Justice

President Rodrigo Duterte has picked Supreme Court Associate Justice Alexander Gesmundo as the new Chief Justice, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo has confirmed.

Gesmundo bested two other candidates for the post, namely, SC Justices Ramon Paul Hernando and Estela Perlas-Bernabe.

He will replace Chief Justice Diosdado Peralta, who decided to have an early retirement and hung up his robe on his 69th birthday last March 27.

The Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) welcomed Gesmundo’s appointment.

“We congratulate Chief Justice Gesmundo and IBP will continue to cooperate and work with him to make JUSTICE BILIS a reality,” said IBP President Domingo Egon Cayosa said in a statement.

“Chief Justice Gesmundo will have over five years to lead the Supreme Court and we look forward to stability and proactive improvements in the justice sector under his watch,” he added.

Gesmundo will serve as Chief Justice until he reaches the mandatory age of retirement at 70 on November 6, 2026.

Cayosa noted Gesmundo has “served our country in various capacities at the Office of the Solicitor General, Presidential Commission on Good Government, Sandiganbayan, and at the Supreme Court.”

“His experience, dedication, and integrity as a public servant will greatly matter as he leads the judicial branch during these challenging times,” he said.
