Duterte: Never wrong to think of China-donated vax as debt of gratitude

By Prince Golez

There was nothing wrong with admitting that the Philippines holds a debt of gratitude to China for its vaccine donation, President Rodrigo Duterte said.

In his pre-recorded speech Monday, Duterte said that accepting Beijing’s vaccine donation does not mean disregarding the country’s legal rights over the West Philippine Sea.

“It is never, never wrong to say that ‘I owe you a debt of gratitude’. Totoo e. Binigyan tayo, tinanggap natin, ginamit natin,” according to the Chief Executive.

“but it does not mean na tanggapin ko ‘yong bakuna at tapos sabihin ko kalimutan ko na ‘yong claim diyan sa West Philippine Sea, okay na ‘yon dahil sa bakuna. It is never like that,” he added.

The Philippine government earlier received 1 million China-donated Sinovac vaccine CoronaVac shots in two batches – 600,000 doses on February 28 and 400,000 doses last March 24.

Chinese state-owned pharmaceutical giant Sinopharm also donated doses of its Covid-19 vaccine to Manila for “compassionate use.” (AFP)
